Firmesk Wirya Qaneh — born in 1965 in the village of Langa Deh near Sulaymaniyah, two months after the death of her grandfather, the renowned poet Qaneh, and named for the Kurdish word for "tear" — became one of the most decorated Kurdish chess players in history. Eleven-time Iraqi national champion and the first Kurdish woman to take Arab Championship gold, she competed in traditional Kurdish dress on the international stage, carrying her identity to the board across three decades and seven international medals.
